These popular free boat tours of the Port of Melbourne have closed for the year except for a very special up and coming event - Open House Melbourne
It is your chance to get on board for one of these fabulous free boat tours. These tours will be held on Saturday 25 July 2015.
These free guided tours are popular with families as it is a real experience to see huge container ships up close and to feel dwarfed by their awesome size.
You can look up at the giant cranes and see the huge berths for dry cargoes such as cement, grain, sugar and gypsum. The Port of Melbourne is the largest container and general port in Australia and handles two million TEU (those twenty foot containers) each year.
It is always fun to think of where these ships have been and what exotic location these container ships are travelling to. There is much tell-tale information if you look at their flags, insignias and foreign names. It is a bit of a spotting game to play while you are on the tour.
The boat tours visit Australia's busiest container terminal at Swanson Dock, where you can see the massive ships and cranes up close.
In keeping with Open House Melbourne events, no advance bookings will be taken for these tours. Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis, subject to capacity.
More detailed information will be available on the Open House Melbourne website in coming weeks. Please check
