Did you know that the South Australia government hires out Bikes in the city for FREE as part of a strategy to build a cleaner, greener city?
And why not? Central Adelaide, with the Parklands and Torrens River banks, seem almost to be built for commuter biking and recreational cycling. A number of cities in Europe, in particular Amsterdam, have become known as green cities with healthy populations due to similar schemes of hiring out bikes free to the public.
Already over 8,000 South Australians ride to work in each day. South Australia hosts the Tour Down Under and the National Institute of Sport's cycling division. So why not become a city of cyclers?
Riding a bike around the city is not only good for the environment and your health, but studies show it reduces stress because you're not stuck in traffic jams but instead shooting through the parklands.
The bikes are free to hire from Bike SA at any of the nodes dotted around the city. Hire includes the use of a helmet and lock. A current passport or driver's license must be deposited by each user at the time of hire.
Bikes SA website has some great information of how and where to rent bikes. It also has raves from overseas tourists recommending Adelaide as the most bike friendly city they have ever been too.
So, even if you don't live in the city, why not grab your family or friends and grab a bike next weekend and see the city from a different perspective.

This is such a great idea for locals and for tourists visiting the city. Bikes are such a great way to explore the River Torrens, and the Parklands. They also give people an opportunity to get used to riding in the city before they commit to buying their own bike and commuting by bike more often.
