Australia Day in Melbourne is full of free family-friendly events. Only outnumbered by the number of Australian flags that'll be flying, these events span from the inner city all the way out to the outer suburbs.

There's no need to spend heaps of dollarydoos this Australia Day, with all the events below being free to enter and pulling out all the stops to delight Aussie families with the best free entertainment.

1. The Official Flag Raising Ceremony and Australia Day Parade
Australia Day officially begins with the raising of the flag at Melbourne Town Hall, which is followed by the annual Australia Day Parade down Swanston Street. Pack a picnic lunch, grab a good spot on the sidelines and watch the festivities flow past.

2. Coburg Velodrome Food Truck Festival
Much more than just another food truck festival, the Coburg Velodrome Food Truck Festival will be serving up not only Melbourne's finest food trucks, but also heaps of entertainment, including live music, an outdoor cinema, a circus, roaming performers, Mexican wrestling, eating contests, workshops, visual arts and more. And, it's all free.

The program definitely has every entertainment angle covered, with the velodrome oval set to be overflowing with free fun for the whole family.

3. Australia Day Festival at Dandenong Park
If it's fireworks you're after, head to Dandenong Park, where a fireworks show full of shimmer and shine will be set off near Dandenong Creek after 9pm. Earlier in the day you'll find a petting zoo, rides, live music and cultural performances in the park.

This is the longest running Australia Day event so the organisers clearly know how to keep people coming back.

4. RACV Australia Day Festival
This one is for the families who love their cars. Envy-inducing vintage and classic cars will on display in the Kings Domain Gardens for everyone to 'ooh and aah' at. And, if not all family members are as car obsessed as others, there will be a concert for the kids and food trucks for the famished.

5. Dachshund Parade
A parade of a completely different kind, a pack of absolute cuties will be strutting their stuff through the Great Hall of NGV International this Australia Day. And, after the cuteness overload the dachshund parade will provide, the kids can run off and get creative with the free doggy inspired crafts.
