I'm a freelance writer living in Perth. Having 2 young kids with endless energy, we are always on the lookout for new outdoor activities.

Long weekends and school holidays covered
This April has got quite a few major events that it's hard to know where to focus. Firstly there's the busiest weekend of the year for domestic tourism: the Easter long weekend. And then there's the school holiday, and just one week after that it's the Centenary of ANZAC.

No doubt there would be many of us who'd spend the weekend of 25 Apr at an event commemorating 100 years of Gallipolli landing, so that's one (long) weekend covered. But what about the other weekends and the school holiday too? Read on to find discover more.

Rockingham Easter Carnival
When:
Fri 3 Apr 12-9pm; Sat 4 & Sun 5 Apr 10am-9pm
Where: Village Green, cnr Patterson Rd & Flinders Lane, Rockingham.
More info here.

This event is free entry with some free activities like giant games & craft; but with some paid activities like carnival rides & show bags. Think of it like the Perth Royal Show's little sister, except there's no tickets to buy!

Fremantle Street Arts Festival
When:
4-6 Apr
Where: Various locations in Fremantle.
More info here.
Fremantle Street Arts Festival
Watching a street arts performer in Fremantle

This annual event is always a crowd favourite. If you have never stood in a street corner somewhere in Fremantle, watching a street performer, then some would say you haven't really walked the streets of Fremantle properly. There are too many free family-friendly events to be listed here, so I wrote another article just for that purpose. Check the list, pick your show; or if you can't be bothered, just hang around one of the pitches and you'll sure to catch something entertaining.

Piazzarama Northbridge
When:
Sun 5 Apr, 12noon-6.30pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr James & Lake Sts, Northbridge.
More info here.

The theme for the month of April is Easter Feaster. The movies are a bit eclectic: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not the Johnny Depp version but the old 1971 version) to open the event at noon and Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo to close at 4pm. And in between, there will be the following highlights:
  • 1.30-4pm: Craft workshops - Easter cookie decorating

  • 1.45-2.30pm: Big Bunny Picnic

  • 2.45-3.15pm: Sparkles & Hamish Magic Show

  • 3.30-4pm: Rock & Toddle
Perth City Beatz & Skillz

Perth City Beatz & Skillz
When:
Mon-Thu 6-9 & 13-16 Apr, 10am-2pm
Where: Forrest Place, Murray St Mall, Perth.
More info here.

For the past few years, every school holiday, City of Perth would host a kids event at Forrest Place, and this April school holiday, this is the event. It's an opportunity for kids to try their motoric 'skillz' at different things, such as balancing, hulahooping, and lasso. In the background there will be percussion music as the 'beatz.' Suitable for kids of primary school age and their little brothers or sisters (3-12 years).

Piazza Coderdojo
When:
Fri 10 Apr, 10am-4pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr James & Lake Sts, Northbridge.
More info here.

Piazza Coderdojo is a full day event catering to kids (and their carers/ educators) who are interested in computer programming (BYO device). There will be presentation, showcases, and opportunity to do hands-on programming. This event really got me excited because there are still not many community events for kids in the area of STEM. It is an emerging area of interest, in the past decade for adults and university students, and now getting younger and younger into high school and even primary school kids. So, not surprisingly, the targeted age group for this one is 7-17. And they do have kids-friendly programming interface, so they won't have to dive straight into the deep end.

Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day
When:
Tue 14 Apr, 1-9pm
Where: Ben and Jerry's Northbridge and Hillarys Shops
More info here.
Ben & Jerry

Although there's no such thing as a free lunch, apparently there's such as thing as a free scoop of ice-cream. Faithful from the beginning, Ben and Jerry (or at least their minions) have been serving free cones for one day per year for the past thirty plus years now. Now you only need to decide if a free cone is worth so much of your time queueing.

Fresh Prints
When:
Sat 18 Apr, 12noon-5pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr James and Lake Street, Northbridge.
More info here.

Celebrate all things ink and paper through this one day event involving market stalls, storytime (12:30pm, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm), printmaking workshop (2-3pm), comics workshop (12:30-4:30pm, pre-registration required), vintage typewriter exhibition (12-5pm), and more. No digital entertainment provided.

ANZAC Day Centenary Service
When:
Sat 25 Apr
Where: Various locations
More info here.

I don't think I need to explain anything about this one. With the approach of centenary year, there has been so much new information published in the past months, in the form of children and adult books, TV series, tour program, and so on. The main dawn service for the day would of course be at Kings Park War Memorial. But I am sure there are services all over the state, just check with your local council.

Hullabaloo Hollywood Canteen
When:
Mon 27 Apr, 1-4.30pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr James and Lake Street, Northbridge.
More info here.

For this last long weekend of April, why not go to an event that all family members can enjoy. Starting with a children movie, The Aristocats (1970 - G), it will then continue with a two hour long swing dance session, live music provided by the Cottontail Trio. This, apparently, was how our parents/ grandparents enjoyed themselves in the 1940s.

Free Flicks for Kids plus Sunday Big Kids
When:
Every Saturday 5.30pm or Sunday 8.30pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr James & Lake Sts, Northbridge.
More info here.

The weather is cooling down now and soon it would be too cold to be sitting outdoor for an evening of family movie. So make use of this last month of Saturday night movies before the event retires to hibernate.

On top of these, we also have Big Kids Sundays, a series of Sunday night movies targetting slightly bigger kids, so depending on the age of your children, these might be more attractive to them instead:
