This is a school holiday edition of this article, and as a result, the article will not limit itself to weekends this time, but will go all over the place during the week to find family-friendly activities to suit different ages.

You readers might be away on holiday too, and wouldn't need to know any event in Perth. On the other hand, you might need a double dose of the events if you have friends or relatives with kids visiting from out of town, and you really want to take the kids out without breaking the budget. No worries. Despite its shortcomings, the list does have its gems and fireworks (literally). So enjoy.

**City of Canning's New Years Day Concert and Fireworks Display
When:** Thursday, 1 January, 4-8pm.
Where: Shelley Beach Foreshore, Riverton Drive, Shelley.
More info here .

This annual event is always very popular, so if you want to get the best vantage point near the water for the fireworks, come early and mark your spot with a picnic rug. If you're into dancing, don't be shy and come near the stage and enjoy the live music. If you're more into playground, there's one available in the park as well. The city has promised a waterslide and bouncy castle for the kids too, so bring a change of clothes so they don't catch a chill.

One warning, based on experience, queue for the toilets will very likely be long so be prepared and bring a training nappy for kids who can't "hold" for very long yet.

**Free Flicks for Kids
When:** Every Saturday 5.30-7pm
Where: Northbridge Piazza, cnr Lake & James Sts, Northbridge
More info here .

In December they called themselves Festive Flicks for Kids but now that the Festival of Christmas is over, they're simply Free Flicks for Kids. But the idea is the same: you get to bring your family to watch an outdoor movie for free, with bean bags provided. Some of the movies are pretty old, some pretty new (from 2014), but they're all kid-friendly. The schedule for January are as follow:
3 Jan: Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014) - PG
10 Jan: Honey I Shrunk the Kids (1989) - PG
17 Jan: A Cat In Paris (2010) - PG
24 Jan: Enchanted (2007) - G
31 Jan: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) – PG (pictured)
**Summerset Arts Festival - Seaside Carnival
When:** Saturday 17 January, 4-9pm
Where: Scarborough Beach Reserve, The Esplanade, Scarborough
More info here .

There are many events under the umbrella of the Summerset Arts Festival 2015. However I'd highlight three of them in this article. All are family-friendly and free to attend.

The first one is Seaside Carnival. This is the official festival opening event, and it promises to be full of carnival rides, circus performances, roving entertainers, food trucks and the iconic Snake Pit open air dance-floor with live music as accompaniment.

**Summerset Arts Festival - Beach Storytime
When:** Tuesday 20 January, 9.30-10.30am
Where: Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre, The Esplanade, Scarborough
More info here .

This is a special story time in a beautiful setting with Glenn Swift, an extraordinary story teller who is back for this popular kids event. If you need further proof of his extraordinariness, let it be known that Glenn Swift has been the official Santa of the City of Perth for the past 21 years and recently came third at the Santa Winter Games in Sweden (beating even Santas from Europe). How cool is that?

**Summerset Arts Festival - Pick Up & Play with Access Circus
When:** Tuesday, 27 January, 3.30-5.30pm
Where: Scarborough Beach Reserve, The Esplanade, Scarborough
More info here .

Circus has always been a popular activity with the kids and even though it's good to be able to watch a circus performance, it is even better to learn a circus skill. In this event, there will be opportunities to try your hands on circus tricks such as juggling, diabolos, story sticks, poi, and spinning plates. Other than improving hands-eye coordination, kids also like to show-off their skills to families and friends. So why not join in the fun in this afternoon event during the holiday?

**Australia Day
When:** Monday 26 January
Where: Various places around Perth
More info here .

This is the mother of all summer celebrations for us in Perth. There's an article especially dedicated to this major event, so you can either click this link and find one that suits you best, or host your own BBQ and forget about the crowd.

**Music in the Park
When:** Saturday 17 January; 6-9.30pm
Where: Penistone Park, Penistone St, Greenwood
More info here .

January 2015 will see the third and last concert in the series from the City of Joondalup. Like the previous two concerts, free children's activities will be from 6pm whereeas the music on stage will start at 6.45pm and finish at 9.30pm.The artists scheduled to perform are:
Mama Kin : An entertainer from Fremantle who has won and been nominated for various awards including being nominated for an ARIA award for Best Blues and Roots Album 2013.
Benny Walker and Band : This artist hails from regional Victoria and has also won awards including Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award for Best New Talent 2012.
Patient Little Sister : Perth siblings Eliza and James Rogers are joined by Alex Megaw and Jason Bale into a band worth reckoning.Triple J unearthed put them under the genre of indie/ pop/ roots, and if you don't know what that sounds like, why not show up for this concert and find out.
And as this series finishes, other city councils is starting their own outdoor music events. Watch this space.
