For those folks who haven't heard of Iain (Fred) Smith, he is an amazing Australian singer/songwriter/comedian and public speaker who has over the last 15 years had an extensive experience working on peace keeping missions in Australian theatres of conflict in the South Pacific and Afghanistan. Smith was deeply affected by the deaths of Australian soldiers and the injured who were repatriated home he created a collection of Australians-at-war-ballads, which continue the tradition forged by earlier war-ballads such as And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda, I was only 19 and Khe Sanh.

While working with Peace Monitoring operations in Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, his former career performing comical and satirical ballads stood him in good stead as he became very popular with local radio hosting his own pidgin language program and recording with local musicians a cassette of peace songs. His award winning CD entitled Bagarap Empires, pronounced 'Buggerup' won rave reviews and the National Film and Sound Archives Award for Best New Release of 2002. Canada's Penguin Eggs magazine hailed it as "an amazing piece of work. Truly folk music at it's best."

In 2005 he toured the US, Canada and the festival circuit in Australia. Most of his eight CD's are solo performances, but he has collaborated with Liz Frencham and the Spooky Men's Chorale. The two CD's Into My Room and Lovethongs; believe it or not, is a collection of Fred's love songs. Both won the National and Sound Archives Award.

During the final weeks of the Peace Monitoring Group's operations in 2003, Fred and his Bulmakau Band were followed by film-maker, Agafonoff&init=public Nick Agafonoff filming the documentary Bougainville Sky, which was released in 2004

.
