Franklin is a suburb of Gungahlin, less than twenty minutes north of the city. It is a newer suburb of Canberra with modern houses and more being built. Located in the heart of the area is the new - so new that they are still growing in the trees and grass surrounding it. According to the notices around the playground the grassy reserve will be open late 2015, however the extensive and colourful playground is now available for play.
The playground is divided into sections. Firstly there is
PLAY...
This area has an huge climbing rope frame as well as a toddler area with small swings, slide and bouncy toys to play on with soft fall sponge underneath. There is a free BBQ and tables nearby so you can set up camp and have a picnic in the shade with your children playing nearby.
Further along there is the
FLEX area for adult exercisers, and children intrigued by this new and different playground equipment. Adjacent to FLEX is the table tennis area - a surprise and fun addition to this playground.
The day we visited the children who gathered around the tables announced it was the "best idea ever!"....if only we had all bought our paddles and balls. So if you have a set at home, bring them for a play.
Further along there is a basketball court and soccer field rolled into one big caged area. There are cage nets for the soccer as well as rock climbing steps up the side. This area is still locked and not ready to use, however the grand opening mustn't be too far way.
The next stage of the park has an unusual flat swing (that looks like a round domino) that the kids love. As you push and it spins around the kids can look out to one side of the park...
Then turn to see what is going on at the other end...
The last area of the playground is
SKATE, with two skate bowls under shade to utilise. Whilst we were there it was used by bike riders, however it would also be popular spot for skaters and scooters. Smaller kids were also just sliding down on their bottoms, so it is fun for all ages.
You can also set up camp at this end of the park for a BBQ and picnic tables in the shade. When the grassy reserve opens this will be the perfect picnic spot to spend the day with plenty of room for the kids to run around, with cows moo-ing in the fields nearby.
The Recreational Park in Franklin is an impressive playground for all ages. New playgrounds are getting so much more creative these days with fun additions and surprises at every turn. There is toilet facilities, shade, bubblers, BBQ's - all the facilities every family needs.
We wish this was our local park, however even if you don't live close by it is definitively worth the drive to this new and modern playground.
