Adelaide Fringe Festival's Garden of Unearthly Delights offers an array of shows from the hilariously entertaining to the downright absurd. The perfect combination of both, Frank Woodley—formerly of popular comedy duo Lano and Woodley—along with acrobat Simon Yates, present their new hour-long show 'Inside'.

Woodley and Yates play two brothers named Vicktor and Vissilli who are trapped inside a strange prison in which peculiar experiments are conducted on them. The story follows the two brothers as they go about their life in such an entrapment, and begin to dream of and then plan their escape to the outside world. A third character, played by a piece of cardboard complete with eyes moved cleverly by Woodley and Yates, also enters the heartrending scene as a prison guard who is forever delivering unwelcome news.

Performed not in a theatre but in an intimate tent entitled Romantiek, the small stage is set up as a caged cell and comprises merely of a bunk bed, a hanging light and a toilet. Lighting and sound effects contribute to the performance, bringing the audience into the scene and making it feel all the more real. The show features the use of minimal yet clever props, stunning acrobatic and physical stunts and is simultaneously tragic yet oddly funny. As you get to know the characters over the duration of the show, you fall in love with their quirks and obvious brotherly affection towards each other. Some moments make you laugh out loud, while others cause you to choke back tears.

While 'Inside' cannot be defined as the typical comedic play or even anything like the kind of show you would expect from funny man Frank Woodley, it is definitely worth seeing. The raw emotion and ever-changing facial expressions will draw you in from the moment Woodley and Yates step on stage. Even though you might spend some of the show slightly confused, you should leave satisfied at having experienced such a well written and performed production. The show runs in Adelaide until the end of the Fringe Festival on March 17 and will then move to Melbourne to be part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
