Keep an eye out for Fraga's Café as you drive in to Marysville from Melbourne.

A jewel of colour beneath a soaring green avenue of ancient Oak and Elm, this local institution offers travellers and regulars great hospitality daily.

Brilliant yellow flags flutter over outdoor diners as they unwind under cheery red umbrellas, sharing the view with brightly coloured King Parrots. It's a top place to be on a warm day with a crisp cold beer.

On clear winter days, skiers can be found huddled over mugs of steaming hot chocolate. Fully licensed, Fraga's can slip in something a little stronger when there's a mountain chill in the air.

The interior décor is artistic and welcoming. There are framed works for sale on the gaily coloured walls and a comfy banquette upholstered with a selection of hand-made patchwork quilts that run down one wall, inviting cosy conversation.

The overall effect is stylish comfort with slightly edgy country style.

For families seeking a bit of a break after the excitement of Marysville's entertaining playground there is great coffee, milkshakes and cake. A large tub of chalk is provided for budding pavement artists and the very orderly op shop just around the corner does a roaring trade on books, toys, board games and puzzles.

If you are travelling sans famille, there are tables for one and two in the large window where you can dine in splendid isolation or join a chat, just by tilting your chair.

It is clear that this is the place that locals come to keep their finger on the pulse and for their daily coffee fix.

Their secret is shared with the multitudes of bikers on the Healesville via Warburton circuit who call in regularly for a caffeine pit-stop at the colourful mosaic bench table beneath the giant oak.

Dogs are welcome to wait outside, or join their families beside the al-fresco area, where there's a custom made table big enough for even the largest extended family.

Fraga's is open daily between 9.30am - 4.30pm for lazy breakfast and lunch and while often busy on the weekends, never feels crowded.

Menu items include warm and crusty baguettes filled with fresh local ingredients, Yarra Valley pasta, crispy salted fries, daily pie & soup specials and a range of sweet treats.
