You are locked in a room with a series of ever more difficult puzzles that you have to solve to make your escape. Welcome to the Fox in a Box escape room experience, where you and a team of friends pit your intelligence and wits against the game designers in what is a challenging and fun experience suitable for all ages.



What are escape rooms

Escape rooms were invented independently in both Hungary and Japan. The initial concept is a puzzle room, usually electronically controlled, with a series of challenges to beat to unlock each new puzzle or clue until you can escape from the room. They have evolved since then into story-based rooms where you might be trying to escape or you are attempting to do something like defuse a bomb or save the world.



Escape rooms are fairly new to Australia with the initial ones being fairly simple, but Australia is quickly developing when it comes to escape rooms. Most well-designed escape rooms feature a story-based immersive experience, with each new escape room company bringing in new ideas, concepts and experiences.

About Fox in a Box

Fox in Box originally started in Hungary (one of the homes of escape rooms), moved to Sweden and changed its name. It has built an international reputation in escape rooms, having built escape rooms for companies such as BMW and Red Bull Mind Games, and have created original escape challenges for The Late Late Show with James Corden.

In Brisbane, Fox in a Box has 6 escape rooms. This includes 2 Prison Break rooms, The Bunker, where you need to solve puzzles to prevent a nuclear war, Zombie Lab, where you need to find a cure for a zombie virus outbreak, Tesla's Mystery and Zodiac Killer. The easiest rooms are Prison Break and The Bunker with Tesla's Mystery Zodiac Killer being the hardest.



Each room can hold between 2 to 6 players with the ideal number of players being 4. When you have 6 people, the rooms can feel a little full, but not crowded, and of course, the more brains, the easier it can be to solve the puzzles. For larger groups, you can book multiple rooms. As there are 2 Prison Break rooms you can go head-to-head, competing against another team to escape first.

The rooms are a great balance between ambiance and clean design. Some escape room companies just provide fairly random puzzles without much of a theme, and others put too much irrelevant items in the room for the experience. With Fox In Box, the environment is immersive, even to the point of some rooms providing outfits to go with the experience. At the same time, you can see easily find the puzzles to solve, the items to use and information that is helpful.



To help teams along, each room has multiple cameras and a dedicated controller. So you can ask for clues and hints to solve a problem that you are stuck on. Meaning, you won't get completely stuck on just one puzzle.



Fox in the Box for kids

Fox in the Box escape rooms are suitable for all ages. Kids under 7 play for free, and it is recommended that 10 is around the right age to start playing. The younger the team, the more clues and help they will get. Fox in the Box is also a good place to host a kids or children's party. First, you get out of the room, and afterwards, enjoy food and some games in the reception area.



Our Prison Break Experience

The room that we tried was the Prison Break. This experience starts with prison guards hauling you off to cells, providing you with prison uniforms to get into the spirit: luckily orange is the new black. Then your team is divided into 2 and locked into separate facing cells.



This makes Prison Break the best teamwork escape room that I have experienced. Here there are clues and items in each cell, and you need to talk to each other to solve the problems. That is, a clue might be in one cell, while a puzzle might be in another. There are also a few little physical problems to solve with items distributed between the cells.

Once you break out of the cells, you still need to escape the prison by solving a number of other puzzles. This is a common feature of escape rooms. Many will have a hidden room which you need to unlock where you will find more puzzles.

Our team, which included 3 people who had done escape rooms before, escaped in 45 minutes, with the time limit being 60 minutes. This is one of the easier rooms, but there were still a number of puzzles that challenged us and required a fair amount of creative thinking to solve. With the nature of the puzzles and experience, it was a great fun game to play.

Escape room tips

The valuable skill in any escape room is talking and sharing information and ideas.
No one should be in charge, instead, everyone is looking and trying different things.
No idea is right or wrong, you have to try and it and see. If it doesn't work, try something else or try it a different way.
Be creative and open minded in your approach.
If you find an item, then there is usually some use for it.
Once you have used an item, you probably won't need to use it again.
Try and have as much fun as possible.

Overall

Escape rooms are a fun experience suitable for all ages. Often people who have done one escape room will return for additional escape room experiences. Fox in a Box is a a great new addition to the escape room scene in Brisbane, with wonderful immersive rooms.
