When you think of Australia's top wine regions, you usually think of the Hunter Valley, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Margaret River, to name just a few. You probably wouldn't think of...Canberra.

But you'd be surprised. The Canberra region has actually been growing grapes and producing wines since the 1840s. We are now home to more than 140 vineyards with more than 40 wineries, all within easy driving distance from the city. And we produce award-winning national and international wines, such as those from Clonakilla, Lerida Estate, Helm Wines, and Shaw Vineyard Estate.

One of my favourite Canberra region wineries is .

Located in Murrumbateman, is an award-winning,intergenerational family run business. Sarah Collingwood, who owns and operates the micro-winery with her husband and parents, was a winner in the 2017 Australian Women in Wine awards.

Consisting of 33 acres that were planted in 1998/1999, grows Shiraz, Riesling, Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese. Their award-winning wines include the 2015 Sangiovese which was awarded a bronze medal at the 2016 Boutique Wine Awards and the 2015 Shiraz which won three gold medals, a silver medal and two bronze medals in 2016.

Four Winds has a cellar door for wine tasting, and delicious wood-fired pizzas are served from Thurs-Mon from noon to 3pm. There is also a deli fridge if you prefer to make up your own platter.

You can sit inside (tables can accommodate groups up to 8) or outside in the large, covered outdoor seating area that can fit groups up to twenty people. Or you can enjoy your feast amongst the vines!

is the perfect venue for a birthday or other special occasion, a lazy Sunday lunch with family and friends, a catch up with the girls, or your next Christmas party!

is located on the corner of Murrumbateman Road and Patemans Lane, Murrumbateman. Open Thursday-Monday from 10am-4pm (pizzas served noon to 3pm). For more information, visit their website here . And for more information on the Canberra region's other excellent wineries, visit Liquid Geography , the website of the Canberra District Wine Industry Association.
