The word spread quickly that there was a new chocolate shop in the Southern Vales district. A cute little shop front had appeared in Willunga and a visit to explore was a must.
Four Winds chocolate is the brain child of Wendy Ashwin. Wendy has been a cook from way back and very much enjoys the creative side of cooking. She decided to share her love of chocolate and cooking with everyone. She describes herself as a melter and creator.
'I melt chocolate and craft it into something I hope others will enjoy. It is exciting to rework a filling many times until I create a chocolate just as I had imagined.'

Four Winds Chocolate, maker of exquisite handmade chocolates
The Chocolate Selection
Four Winds make exquisite hand made chocolates. They look and taste divine. They are the perfect gift to spoil someone on that special occasion. In the cabinet is a wonderful array of chocolates, priced at $2.50 each. Wendy uses some native ingredients and experiments with different flavours. They are beautifully decorated with a sense of detail.

Some of the bakery selection
The Bakery SelectionWendy also shows her flair for baking with yummy brioche, scones, donuts, brownies, cookies and some funky lamingtons. The brioche is $6, filled donuts $5 and brownies $4. It is hard to stop drooling in this shop! This little shop has only been open a short while but already developed a following. Which is quite amazing as it is only open each Saturday, with limited opening times on the Sunday if there is stock.

Chocolate maker Wendy Ashwin with her daughter Emma
Wendy found her love for cooking as a child, as her dad made sauce, jam tarts, ginger beer, his famous pasties, and best of all, confectionary. The love of food and the process of cooking and creating was born.

Happy Saturday at Four Winds Chocolate
Wendy shares
'We had almond trees in our backyard and we would gather almonds, crack them and then turn them into glistening nuggets of almond toffee. And it didn't stop there...I'm sure I was the only child in the neighbourhood whose father made that most magical of things - honeycomb. Sugar, water and almonds. The magic of transforming those simple ingredients into something so beautiful has always stayed with me. Such is the way with all baking.'

Four Winds Chocolate, 30 High Street, Willunga
Wendy relates how the idea for a shop came about
'People started asking me to bake things for them, then a cafe, a farmers market, and before I knew it Four Winds Chocolate was born. Four Winds is the name of our heritage cottage, over a hundred years old, set in the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.'

Salted caramel to die for at Four Winds Chocolate
Salted Caramel to die forThe word of mouth is that the salted caramel chocolates are to die for. How can you not try some? They are little pieces of glittery gorgeousness. Utterly scrumptious and made with a milk or dark couverture shell (whatever takes your fancy) and filled with house-made oozy butter caramel filling with a touch of salt. Definitely addictive. The ideal gift, or try keep them for yourselves!

The chocolate shop has a retro feel to it
Shop FrontThe chocolate shop has a retro feel to it with old fashioned scales and décor. The large shop front windows show off trays of freshly made brioche and scones, which sell like hot cakes. The best advice here is to get in early. This is the most adorable shop with a flair for originality, old world charm and deliciously addictive chocolates and cakes.
