The Australian Running Festival is the perfect excuse to have a fun and active family weekend away in Canberra. You don't have to be a marathon runner, you can attempt the 5km or 10km run in the 'Blue' fun run group for walkers, fun groups, children, pushed wheelchairs and strollers.
The course is very scenic, starting just outside Old Parliament, down to Lake Burley Griffin and surrounds (depending which race you are doing), then up the hill to Parliament House before heading back down towards Old Parliament House to the finish line.
The best feeling is passing through the finish line, downing some water from the drink station, picking up a banana and your medal as memorabilia. Then find a spot to stretch at the 'Rebels' stretching station or on the lawn by the food and merchandise stalls.
Snow falls and waterfalls… what serendipity! It was spectacular, mesmerising and absolutely magical. Last winter, we decided to take a detour to Gibraltar Falls before heading back to Sydney from the Snowy Mountains and mother nature put on a spectacular show for us! There was enough snow cover for the kids to make snow angels and have a friendly snow ball fight.
Gibralter Falls is an easy 45mins drive south of Canberra City Centre towards Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve located on the edge of Gibraltar Creek Pine Forest, off Corin Rd. There is ample parking, picnic tables and toilet amenities (windy-loos) on site.
The walking track to the falls is a short 5mins walk.

Beat the summer heat, visit Corin Forest and spend the morning riding the 1.2km alpine - slide down the mountain through the majestic Australian wilderness.
The ascent up is rather steep, the pulley works hard pulling up the toboggan for a good 5-10 minutes before reaching the top. The descent is dependent on your need for speed; my 9-year-old son zoomed down the hill, taking every corner confidently and was at the bottom within minutes.
On one of the descent runs, a mob of kangaroos popped out the bushes hopped along beside us then disappeared into the bushes. It was a pleasant but scary encounter, as it all happened so fast.
We didn't stay for lunch but the wood-fired pizza menu at the cafe looked good. They also have picnic and BBQ facilities there. Enjoy lunch in a tranquil setting by stream amongst the rustic Australian bush, soaking up the sun and fresh mountain air.
