Can You Pick All The Herbs & Spices In This Gin?
Forget the playground for the kids, I have a very special playground for adults only and it is called Four Pillars Gin Distillery. Filled with copper equipment as bright and sparkly as any playground and guaranteed to get the adults as happy as a kid on a roundabout.
It is located at the very entrance of the tourist town of Healesville. As you enter the picturesque town of Healesville, to your left you will see a large brown building somewhat like a huge shed, emblazoned with beautiful copper writing, announcing that you have arrived at Four Pillars.
In what seems to be more of an experience than a bar, you'll be taken on a gin journey. Haven't been yet? Let me be your guide for the moment.
As you enter the waitress at the front door (who seems to be a little more like a tour guide than a waitress, with her extremely knowledgeable information), will guide you on how the process works. Whether this process is the distillery itself or just your drinking experience, well that's up to you. She will assist to explore what is available for your tasting pleasure. All the while you are probably mesmerised by the beautiful round windows hinting at the most exquisite copper distillery - it really is quite fascinating to look at.
At the front entrance is a row of different tasting experiences and for $10 (refundable with the purchase of any 700ml bottle of gin) you can take yourself on a taste bud tasting journey. Learning how to discern all of the different herbs and the flavours contained within each different type of gin.
Presented with glasses containing herbs and spices and set amidst native bush flowers, the scene is set for an organic journey created through the distillation process. Botanicals you may taste may include Tasmanian Pepperberry, Lemon Myrtle, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Cardamom, Coriander Seeds, Lavender and Angelica Root with the added twist of Oranges.
However if you have arrived on your own or with a friend and you really just want to sip a refreshing drink and chat together, then may I suggest the gin paddle board tasting platter.
For $12 you will get 3 different glasses each with different herbs and fruits and a different type of gin, to the side of that will be a silver bucket with a bottle of tonic water on ice. You are then able to taste the different varieties straight or dilute them as much or as little as you like.
Some small snacks are available to compliment your tasting journey, including lovely platters of Yarra Valley olives and locally produced cheeses.
