If you are a fledgling photographer or one in full flight, there will be something to interest you in the month-long biennial FotoFreo Festival 2012 running from March 16 to April 15.
The festival showcases Australian and international artists and gives the public an insight into the techniques and concepts involved in their success at exhibitions, workshops, book launches, projections and discussions to be held at various venues across Fremantle, Perth and Midland.
This "foto festival" offers something to inspire any shutterbug with workshops or talks on topics such as landscape, the studio nude, underwater, dance, documentary and the exciting "trails of light" photography. As well, free public exhibitions give us all an opportunity to appreciate the beautiful, varied, dynamic and sometimes challenging works of leading photographers of each style.
One of two main projects featuring in the festival is the free exhibition called "The Fremantle Markets" by Perth's Bo Wang to be opened officially by the Mayor of Fremantle, Mr Brad Pettitt at 11.00am on March 17 in the Yard of the markets and continuing until April 15 from 9.00am until 8.00pm on Fridays and from 9.00am until 5.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
In "Fremantle Markets" Bo Wang has captured his unique perspective on one summer of this familiar icon. In one series he captures market-goers as they venture form the darkened pavilions into the harsh Aussie sunlight. Bo's camera catches a moment rarely noticed, the gathering of one's senses between one facet of life and another, shown beautifully in Bo's stunning photograph "Red Dress".
The other main project of the Festival is the series No Worries: Martin Parr by Martin Parr and My India by Raghu Rai being exhibited free to the public at the Western Australian Maritime Museum Victoria Quay Fremantle from 17 March until 15 April.
The Festival opens officially on March 16 from 6.30 to 7.30 at the Fremantle Arts Centre with the launch of a group showcase of four major works which runs as a free event at the Fremantle Arts Centre, 1 Finnerty St, Fremantle from 17 March to 13 May every day from 10.00am until 5.00pm. Wheelchair access is provided. "Fair Game" by Eric Bridgeman is a confronting and humorous summary of his career and life shaped by his Australian and Papua-New Guinean heritage.
"The Portrait: Contemporary Indian Photography" by five artists is an exploration into how current styles have been shaped by the modern issues confronting India today.
"Salt" is an exploration into the Australian landscape by the artist Murray Fredericks who has tapped into what he refers to as "awe-inspiring and monumental landscapes".
An unusual approach is Richard Simpkin's work-in-progress which cleverly draws on the expression "rich and famous" for his photobiography "Richard and Famous" in which the camera reveals his life from adolescence to the present, highlighting the contact he is having along his life journey with famous people such as Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson and the Dalai Lama.
Although most of the FotoFreo festival exhibitions are free, some other events like workshops are ticketed so check the website. Last updated on March 2nd to see the event list with times, venues and costings.
