On grey, rainy day in Brisbane, what better place to take shelter than a café serving homely food with a little flair? That was where I found myself for lunch, at Forages Deli/Café in the suburban area of Taringa, a short bus ride away from UQ. Considering its proximity, I was surprised it wasn't busier- only a few retirees were around when I arrived, though trade picked up later on.

You order at the counter- either from one of the many tempting items in the glass display cabinet, or their menu. They do breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and most things in between, so there's always a reason to stop by.

In our household, the savoury muffins are a favourite and we often get them to take away and eat for lunch during the week. They are a generous size and good value: $6.95 for either vegetable or ham, cheese and corn. The vegetable muffin is nicely spicy- a change from all those bland, shop-bought muffins.

Try as I might to recreate this one in my own kitchen though, I can never get it as good: I'll just have to keep coming back until I do!

On this rainy day their range of quiches, tarts, salads and sandwiches all looked tempting, as did various items on their menu, but it was the savoury muffin I was drawn to once again. In store they serve it with sour cream and homemade chutney, which is just what is necessary to balance out the spiciness.

Others around me were tucking into the homemade soup of the day- cauliflower and blue cheese when I visited; on my next visit I'll have to be more adventurous!

The café atmosphere is a little industrial with the hum of the extractor fan in the background, but the friendly staff more than make up for it. They know their regulars by name and service is very quick- within minutes of ordering I was tucking into my muffin. Although I didn't get a chance to check out the desserts this time, there were plenty on offer: scones, tarts, brownies and many more.

Their breakfast menu and lunch menus are fairly standard lots of egg variations for breakfast and hot sandwiches for lunch, but everything is done well and I've never been disappointed on a visit here. If you're still not satiated by a visit, the King of Cakes German Bakery is just a few doors down, with all the cakes you could wish for!
