Make friends with a chook
for cluck's sake, chickens, books about chickens, backyard chicken keeping, books about animals

For Cluck's Sake
by Stacia Tolman is described by the publishers as "the perfect gift for the backyard chicken farmer, owner, or breeder in your life (and we know you have one)."

It is definitely all about chickens. Unfortunately it suffers a bit by comparison with Melissa Caughey's excellent book on the same subject, How to Speak Chicken, which contained personal stories from backyard chicken keepers about the birds they have known and loved, fascinating scientific information about chickens and beautiful photos of the birds talked about. For Cluck's Sake has colour photos too, but the picture they have used to represent Rhode Island Reds doesn't look like any Rhode Island Reds I've ever seen. A reverse image search tells me it's a royalty free stock photo from Shutterstock that's supposed to be of Rhode Island Red hens, so perhaps though it looks like they might be young pullets rather than adult hens. I don't pretend to be a chicken expert (just an enthusiast), but as far as I can tell it isn't a typical example of the breed, which makes me a bit suspicious as to whether the rest of the pictures they have used are true examples of the breeds represented. If you just want the book for pretty pictures and fun facts that might be fine, but may not be reliable if you want to actually identify specific breeds.

The book contains many interesting snippets of information about chickens, set out apparently at random without context, interspersed with jokes that are just famous quotations with "chicken" substituted for keywords, such as:

"If you tell the truth chickens you don't have to remember anything"- Mark Twain.

I suppose that might make a fun party game.

Chicken keepers who consider their hens to be pets might find it upsetting that these chicken facts are referred to as "chicken nuggets of wisdom" (ha ha) and interspersed with recipe ideas. I know some people do eat chickens, but I doubt a book marketed for dog lovers would include recipes for roast dog, so I am left wondering who this book is really supposed to be for.

For Cluck's Sake
is a quick read, full of bits and pieces about chickens. It's probably not for more sensitive chicken lovers, or people who want reliable information about chicken breeds, but might be fun for the casual reader, perhaps to enjoy on the toilet.

Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Andrews McMeel Publishing, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not sure which brick and mortar stores would have it, but the Book Depository has it for $16.96
