Footscray not being my 'hood', I hardly ever get there. Getting the opportunity to sink my teeth into a giant squid or two, drove me there. It may well stay on my list of places to go to regularly from now on, for somewhere different to go. Imagine chomping on delicious seafood, squid/calamari to be exact (every seafood lovers delight), then just popping across the road to wash it down with delicious coffee and oh so oozy, freshly baked jam doughnuts!
The staff was super friendly, super helpful, and wore a big smile at Footscray Doughnuts & Coffee. All the attributes that make you want to keep going back. Besides, this little shop is so darn cute! If you're thinking of heading that way, they're at 42 Irving Street, Footscray (0404 121 764), right by the Footscray Train Station, and are open from 5.45am to 5pm every weekday; 7am to 5pm on Saturdays and 7am to 2am on Sundays. How good is the service when you can pre order freshly baked doughnuts and coffees to take away by text (0404121764)? Haamaaazing!
Public transport could be your best bet as parking can be rife in Footscray between train commuters and the Footscray Market right at the doorstep of this cafe. You could literally fall out of the train at the Footscray station, and land at this cute little cafe. There's also a public carpark with pretty reasonable rates right across from the cafe if you must take your car.
I did disclose I'm not familiar with the area, so how was I to know I had actually landed on the formerly occupied, famed Olympic Doughnuts sacred ground. It didn't twig when the current owner mentioned the site had been occupied by one other for over 40 years when I asked how long he'd been here. It was only when I got home and started researching because I was already so impressed by the current Footscray Doughnuts & Coffee who have been here since Saturday 4 March 2017, that I realised.
The hot jam doughnut gauntlet has been passed to a worthy new generation doughnut maker, who from my experience, won't have trouble filling the big doughnut? hole left by its predecessor, if they keep on handing out the delicious fresh bakes, big smiles and friendly service. Amazingly, this tiny little stall pumps out vegan friendly options and a variety of matcha, and masala blend chai teas with vegan friendly milk available. Pretty impressive!
Honouring some of the traditions of their predecessors, owner Russell Karim (owner of Dad And Dave's Cafe) is keeping it simple, while having their own style. A hive of activity, staff make, fry and fill the doughnuts on site between 7am and 10am each morning, using Karim's own doughnut recipe. Be sure to check them out. Markets, squid and a gorgeous cafe all meeting at the same point; you can't go wrong.
