All kinds of art in the West
Footscray Community Arts Centre is located on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Footscray, about 10 minutes drive West from the city or an easy walk from Footscray Station. A former piggery, the Centre is now a hive of community based contemporary arts activity, learning and events celebrating the diverse cultures and talents of the local and wider community.
There is almost always something happening here. Concerts, exhibitions, plays and workshops are held regularly, particularly at holiday times. Events are held on the front and back lawns, in the amphitheatre, the basement theatre and in the adjoining warehouse. I have been to numerous concerts, ranging from African Drumming through to a Somali Choir, Vietnamese String Instruments and Hip Hop. The Centre also runs classes for kids and adults. For kids there are holiday arts programs, a circus club and classes in music and animation. For adults the programs include social media, painting and drawing, photography and digital animation.
You can attend a concert or exhibition or you can simply enjoy a meal or coffee at the Happy Riverside Café and stroll down the back lawn to enjoy a spectacular view of the city underlined by palm trees.
The Footscray Community Arts Centre is well worth a visit, whether you want to participate in the activities, learn something or just enjoy the talents of others. It's one of my favourite places to go. For more information, to become a member, subscribe to the newsletter or to find out what's on see their website.
