Are you a massive foodie at heart? If you aren't already, this cafe will more than likely turn you into one. In fact I'd go so far as to say that Foodies is determined to make you a foodie. It's pulled out every trick in the book and used each flawlessly. By this I mean it has ambience, aesthetics, friendliness, presentation of food and drinks, and delicious-value, all down pat in order to win you over. I walked away from my first visit to this cafe concluding that it is definitely deserving of its 2012 'best cafe in Australia' award; and placed firmly in my mind the necessity of many more visits in future.
The cafe is located in the quiet coastal Sydney suburb of Sandringham. While it may not be located too near the water's edge, I'd say it is close enough to feel beach vibes in the air. This in itself establishes the chilled-out atmosphere that the cafe emanates. On the topic of ambience, I'd say the cafe strikes a couple of perfect balances; one between a chill atmosphere and buzz, and another between homeliness and sophistication. These are created by mellow yet upbeat background music, the laid back dispositions of staff and other visitors; and of course by the very intricate interior.
Where do I begin in describing the decor? I guess a good starting point is the fact that my eyes were in an endless wander around the room throughout the entire visit. My favourite details include the chandelier made of Foodie's coffee-cups, suspended ceramic teapots, the 'canvas sack' cushion covers, and word 'Foodies' stuck onto the ceiling. I felt we were honoured to be seated beneath the cafe's iconic wall feature of the giant hanging fork, knife and spoon. The waiter jokingly said they are what we'll be using for our brunch.
The staff were very welcoming, friendly, and seemed to be perpetually cheerful. This is definitely an important aspect of any noteworthy cafe, adding to Foodies' repertoire of good points. They were extremely attentive and fast-working too, making a point of checking up on us throughout the meal despite there being a literally full room of guests. On a side note, do keep in mind that this cafe is often quite packed out.
The essence of the cafe is of course the carefully crafted beverages and meals. The fact that my banana smoothie came with a skewer of fruit atop it, made it very clear that Foodies pay extra care to giving an artistic touch to their products, as well as providing something that raises the bar just that little bit higher. Yes, the smoothie did also taste like heaven. Although I didn't try any of their coffee, I got the impression that this is also very good from the noticeable number of people ducking in just to whisk away a Foodies cuppa.
To satisfy the foodie munchies, I ordered the 'Club Chicken' from the specials board. This got the "wow" response when it was placed in front of me. Before me was a wooden board with chips and a steak knife-stabbed sandwich (that had chicken, bacon, rocket, and tomato packed into it). This tasted absolutely amazing. Given the high quality of presentation and deliciousness of my meal, I am incredibly keen to experience other items from the cafe's extensive menu.
On offer from the cabinet by the counter are pastries, wraps, and sandwiches of many varieties. These almost enticed me to the extent of feeling hungry again after my meal. The bread used for these comes from award-winning Brasserie Bread, which I hear has some of the best bread in Sydney. Another cute, edible feature on the counter that I noticed prior to leaving was the set of mini tea cups. I'm not really sure what they were made from, but they really were adorable and looked like the perfect bite size treat for the sweet-tooth.
Foodies Deli Cafe, in my opinion, is one of the trendiest cafes in the south of Sydney. It is deserving of its title and recognition by many sources including the Sydney Morning Herald's 'Good Food Under $30' publication. I am overly excited to go back as soon as possible. I also feel excited when placing myself in the shoes of anyone who is yet to discover and experience this wonderful little world of Foodies. Hopefully you'll enjoy every element of it equally as much.
