Food to Try in Taiping

Although Taiping may not be a foodie haven, it still has a couple of notable dishes to bring to the table. Food here is cooked in a style and method characteristic of the town. They are delicious in their own right rather than being associated with other cuisines.
One such dish is the fishball fried koay teow which can be found in Larut Matang Hawker Center on Jalan Panggung Wayang. The food court consists of more than 100 stalls all under one roof, however, stall number 78 would be what you're looking for. This koay teow is certainly different from others of the kind. Firstly, it is served rather wet, and secondly, it is served with fishballs! I could hardly find the dish anywhere else.
Orange chicken rice is another unique food to try while visiting Taiping. I ordered takeaway and was given a packet of orange sauce to pour over the chicken and rice when I got home. Hence, the dish retained its crispiness. This was again the first time I've heard, let alone eaten such a particular meal. I got mine from Tai Chien Restaurant at the corner of Jalan Pasar and Jalan Lim Tee Hooi. They are open all days but Wednesdays.
Opposite Tai Chien, you'll find
Yut Sun Restaurant serving up their signature Hainanese chicken chop every day of the week except on a Tuesday. The chicken is tender and nicely fried. The sauce is generous and well-balanced. I enjoyed it very much.
Other popular fare worth checking out, though not Taiping-exclusive, are cendol from either Ansari Famous Cendol or Bismillah Cendol and fried banana from PSL Goreng Pisang.
Harold's Bread just opened its 54th bakery at Taiping Mall last month. European-themed, the bakery offers freshly baked buns and pastries as well as a range of cakes and desserts. I dropped by to get the pandan layer bar and it was delectable. You're bound to find something here that satisfies your cravings, be it sweet or savoury.
