Just because some of us are getting old, losing our teeth and maybe our short term memory, our long term memories and our taste buds remain. Familiar sound, smells, sights and tastes are very important to an elderly person.

When visiting an elderly person always sit on the side of them where their hearing is best. Do not raise your voice if their hearing is not impaired.

Include the person in your life, they are still a part of the family and without them we would not be here.

Our children benefit greatly from having the values of older people introduced into their lives.

Include pets and children when you are visiting an older person.

Cook with them in the room so the sounds and smells are familiar to them.

Ask closed and not open questions, such as do you want a drink? Then wait for an answer before asking hot or cold, or tea or coffee.

But most of all remember they are a part of us and we are always a part of them.
