The Food Society is an Eastern European restaurant in Darlinghurst which offers a modern twist in a casual dining setting. A group of us decided to check out the seven course degustation menu ($45 for 2 people) as offered on one of the group buying websites. The food was exceptional and the waitstaff were professional and accommodating to all requests.

Now here's the lowdown on the seven course degustation which satisfied all our tummies.

7 course tasting menu

Tasting One - Ricotta and Mushroom Pierogi with Sour Cream and Chives

First came the delicious dumplings with a light sour cream topping and cheesy filling.

Tasting Two - Fried Cauliflower with Paprika, Parsley, Watercress and Red Wine Vinegar

Then came the cauliflower which is my favourite dish of the whole lot. The cauliflower was soft but the florets had a light crunch much like tempura, whilst encompassing all the wonderful flavours from the paprika, parsley and red wine vinegar without being overpowering.

Tasting Three - Chicken Liver Pate with Onion Jam and Toasted Brioche

Third up was the rich chicken liver pate which was not too heavily salted or seasoned served on hot bread and onion jam plus gherkin. The serves of pate were so generous there wasn't enough bread to go around!

Tasting Four - Twice cooked Lamb Ribs with sliced Potatoes, Tomato, Eggplant and Rosemary

Another crowd favourite, the twice cooked lamb ribs were absolutely superb. Crispy on the outside but melt in your mouth as you go for more, this was the ultimate main course. A lovely rustic dish paired with hot roasted vegetables.

Tasting Five and Six - Goulash Society Style Slow Braised Beef Cheek with Spring Vegetables and Paprika Sauce Plus Cabbage Salad with Parsley, Tomato and a Dressing of Olive Oil and White Vinegar

Now I'm no expert on goulash but the version served by the Food Society was really homely and hearty, with baby carrots, broccoli and snap peas in a rich sauce; perfectly complemented by the cold sour cabbage salad.

Tasting Seven - Bulgarian style Mini Ricotta Doughnuts with Walnut Sugar and Dark Chocolate Sauce

By this time our tummies were really full but what is a seven course degustation without dessert? The Food Society serves their signature Bulgarian style Doughnuts with light cheesy centers and a decadent chocolate sauce with walnut sugar.

Eating at The Food Society is truly a social affair. With large sharing boards and tables built for conversation, this is the perfect place to share a meal with fellow foodies. With lots of experience in catering events, The Food Society does not disappoint. The next special they are launching is the gastronomic high tea menu for the Secret Women's Business! Check out the website for more details and booking information.
