Many cultures dining at TAFE South West Ipswich
Harmony Day is an annual event and is celebrated across Australia on 21st March. It was first established in 1999 for an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity Australia is today and for each of us to commit to the value and respect shown to others no matter where they originally came from. It's about saying no to racism. The date also coincides with Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

In the 2011 ABS Census Data, it was found that around 45% of Australians were either born overseas or had one parent who was and that apart from English being spoken, the most common other languages were Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Spanish and Hindi. Australia also has approximately 60 different Indigenous languages spoken throughout the country.

This year TAFE Qld of South West Ipswich is hosting an event from 10.30am to 2.30pm on their Bundamba Campus on Thursday 17th March. They will also be showcasing projects created by the young people of Ipswich, some of which include the production of a documentary, creation of songs, art displays, media exhibitions and cultural performances.

While enjoying the day's activities, we should all take time to reflect and recognise the traditional owners of Australia and also give respect to those who have come from other countries to make their home in our great country. Harmony Day's message is simply "everyone belongs" so let's cut down the barriers that have been around for years and bask in new knowledge and cultures providing education for young and old for now and into the future.
