Jo Harris, the owner of the quirky little gallery Mrs Harris' Shop , is always on the lookout for high quality works on paper which do more than just please the eye: she likes thought-provoking pieces that often comment on current affairs or preoccupations. So for this year's Tasting Australia she invited a group of printmakers who are well-known for their thoughtful, often unconventional approach to contemporary issues.

Bittondi Printmakers' Association is a not-for-profit group that aims to bring printmaking to the public both by holding public exhibitions and by giving community workshops. Bittondi chose the topic and theme, within the brief that Tasting Australia set: namely it had to be about food and produce – but their take on the theme is considerably broader than merely depicting appetising edibles.

Nine artists took up the challenge: Mary Pulford, Geoff Gibbons, Mei Sheong Wong, Cheryl Nolan, Mary Moore, Jorji Gardener, Camilo Esparza, Beth Evans and Ashley Lithgow. Their work explores various issues, including our obsession with sugar and fat, the impact of 'reality' TV, the demand for 'perfect' produce, the ethics of the dairy industry and the plight of bees.

Other prints are less 'issue-related', but refer to food related topics such as bush tucker, digestion, ingredients, the social side of food and alcohol.

As always, the group display expert use of a whole range of printmaking techniques, and their prints are eminently affordable as well as highly desirable!

Food for Thought is showing at Mrs Harris throughout April, including the two weekends of Tasting Australia, as it is one of the TA Associated Events. No bookings are required (TA has a booking system for all events, including this one, but it's not relevant or necessary in this case).
