More than pies and fries
The Spanish Dog

Most football patrons associate the MCG with great games, mediocre meat pies and bland mid-strength beer. But now football fans can choose from more than 20 new exciting food venues at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It is all part of a redevelopment which now offers improved food options. There is also a move to provide better value for money. For as most people find, by the time you pay for your ticket, a plastic cup of drink and snack, $70 or so dollars has floated from your wallet.

You can now buy hot dog creations from around the world at The Dog Bar. This is part of the dude food movement which might loosely be described as food that blokes love. But these aren't simply hot dogs tomato sauce, but dogs with international toppings. Just take a look at the delicious Spanish one picture above with its healthy dose of Spanish onions. Plus it is a move with the culinary times as there are a wave of gourmet hot dog places opening in Melbourne.

The Fish Shop has lots of fish and chip favourites, many with a modern twist, as well as a twist of lemon.

The Food Store offers buns and baguettes packed with fillings. The store is modelled on the concept of a European delicatessen.

In addition to the food outlets, the MCG is also introducing new food carts. The Curry Cart, which was introduced during the cricket season, proved so popular that it will remain a fixture and there will now be a soup cart just in time for those chilly winter games.

As some might have noticed Dominos has been replaced by Crust pizzas. Is there any comparison? Plus some of the old venues are now offering nutritious alternatives, such as salad rolls, fresh salads and pita wraps.

After all, sport should be about health and not just munching on a pie while watching others run off your kilojoules. So here's where they all are and if you find something new worth eating, let us all know so we don't miss out.
