Located on the Adelaide River floodplain, between Darwin and Kakadu, Fogg Dam is a paradise for bird lovers. This Territory treasure is filled with nearly 200 different bird species. It is also a haven for water pythons, freshwater turtles and other wildlife. You can find lots of lotus lilies here with beautiful pink flowers. The boardwalks will take you through the different landscapes and observation platforms to view a large number of resident wading birds.



You can visit Fogg Dam any time and any season of the year to experience spectacular wetlands and wildlife. You can see different species of birds depending on the time and season. You will see more birds if you start early in the morning and many will come out again later in the afternoon.





You can see waterbirds at any time of day. There are several walks through monsoon and floodplain habitats. The best time to see the birdlife is from the end of March until the start of October (during the Dry Season) when birds arrive to escape the winter in other parts of Australia.



Please note that dam wall is closed to people on foot walking due to the potential risk of a crocodile attack. You can stop your vehicle along the dam wall and observe the wildlife, or there are a couple of areas where vehicles can pull over to one side of dam wall to allow others to pass. Towards the west side of the dam wall, there is an extended gravel area on the floodplain side where cars can park for viewing. Along the dam wall, there are two viewing platforms which provide shelter and shade with seating plus interpretive information about birds of the area. Don't miss visiting the bird hides on the dam wall or Pandanus Knoll Lookout, which looks over the wetlands and is spectacular at sunrise and sunset.





You should take binoculars and a bird field guide if you go to Fogg Dam. Cameras are also important to capture nature and the wildlife. Don't forget to bring a water bottle with you are there are no drinking water fountains nearby. Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent are things that you also need while doing bird watching at the Fogg Dam. It's important not to startle the birds. Don't get too close to them or their nests. Move slowly and quietly along the trails. Wearing dull-coloured clothing also helps.
