Wendy Murray is a musician, singer, songwriter, and vocal coach, whose songs are influenced by her early years of exposure to Spanish dance, Latin American music, jazz, blues, folk, pop and musical theatre. I've even heard her sing an Iranian Prayer sung in Farsi!
Along with her appearances at the Brisbane Festival and Biennial Festival of Music local jazz clubs and festivals, she has performed internationally in Cuba, France, Germany, Italy, UK London, Wales, Ireland and Vanuatu.
Wendy's greatest talent is merging her vibrant personality into a wide range of songs, and telling stories through the songs that she so generously shares. From blues to jazz, musical soundtracks to The Beatles and Spanish love songs to swing, Wendy's passionate renditions will have you tapping your toes as well as singing along in your seats. For Wendy doesn't just select songs with pleasant melodies, but rather songs with lyrics full of joy and love - songs with heart.
Wendy will be appearing in Foco Nuevo's special Concert celebrating women singer/songwriters alongside these wondrous women - Sue Monk, Shari Forrester, Angela Toohey and Caroline Hammond.
Who are Foco Nuevo?
"Foco Nuevo is the performance project of Brisbane-based Jumping Fences, the songwriting/performing partnership of Sue Monk and Lachlan Hurse. It was initially organised in association with Ahimsa House, a community space in West End, Brisbane.
The name Foco Nuevo refers to Brisbane's FOCO Club, a lively and alternative performance space which ran every week during the late 1960s. The mix of music and social issues has given a particular character to Brisbane music over several decades and has never been far from the inspiration behind the songwriting of Jumping Fences. Their original work and the influence of their long association with Latin American music have given them a unique profile in Brisbane. Foco Nuevo is a performing space that draws on the approach of the Latin American 'peña', and places it in the Australian context, with a diversity of guest performers and a focus on original material.
