From now until mid-December, Adelaide City Council invites you and your family to come on a spring adventure along the River Torrens and walk the . The trail is between the university footbridge and Frome Road and you can see and learn more about our furry flying friends as they flip, fret and chatter away amongst themselves high up in the trees of Botanic Park.

You may have seen or heard of Adelaide's new native population of bats as they fly over the suburbs at night foraging for food. Adelaide has long been home to seven species of microbats but it was only in 2010 that around 2000 Grey Headed Flying Foxes made their way to Adelaide from Melbourne and established a permanent colony (called a 'camp' in bat terms) right outside the Adelaide Zoo. There's now thought to be about 30,000 of them and this brand new, self-guided trail has been set up to raise awareness and provide information about these native newcomers to SA.

Twenty-five bat tags can be found along the banks of the River Torrens that will inform you of interesting facts and figures about the bats. The kids will have a great time finding them all and filling in the activities in the free booklet. It's available for download and you can also pick one up from:

  • City of Adelaide Customer Centre, 25 Pirie St, Adelaide
  • Wisteria Restaurant, Adelaide Zoo entrance
  • Lounders Boatshed CafĂ©, Victoria Drive
  • SA Museum, Front desk, North Terrace

  • The is self-guided, so you can walk the trail anytime! The best time to visit is just after sunset. You can watch the bats stream out from the trees in every direction as they set off on their nightly foraging journey. It's quite a sight to see so many of them in the sky at once and definitely one for the natural phenomenon seekers!
