Do you enjoy scenic drives leading to quaint country villages? Do you romance after fresh roses and pretty cream cakes shaped liked butterflies? Well, I know a secret place, but my secret isn't a secret anymore.
A lazy two hour drive south from Brisbane through the scenic Numinbah Valley, past Chillingham and round about is the idyllic township of
Tyalgum , sitting in the towering shadow of Mt Warning.
Once a remote timber town, Tyalgum is now one the valley's most popular day trip destinations with idle old shops brought to life just for you.
They are now artisan galleries, showcasing handcrafted local gifts and unique pieces of pottery, glassware, woodwork plus stunning local photography. A bookshop is stuffed with an eclectic selection of new and used books, cool vinyl LPs and curious films. There's a resident silversmiths studio; a vintage shop of memories; an eco friendly organic store offering life-positive products; and magical curios full to the brim of gifts, enchanted fairies, lavender, dolls and lovable teddy bears. However Tyalgum's crowning glory is surely
Flutterbies Cottage Cafe.
Radiating romance with real tablecloths and vases of fresh roses, you step back to a time when the welcome was warm, the service was friendly, the food was homemade and the cakes were coated in real cream. Don't let the old fashioned details fool you. On the menu, along with homemade county pies, you will find breakfast treats like 'spicy baked beans served with avocado, poached eggs and homemade cornbread' or spectacular luncheon choices such as 'Chicken boscaiola - creamy polenta, pine nuts, roast tomatoes and field mushrooms'.
And the choice doesn't stop with the menu as you can decide to sit inside the historic bakery building with its olde English airs or relax in the courtyard garden.
Remember to leave room for the light creamy treat they are renowned for – the Flutterbie cake – best enjoyed with a cup of English Tea or organic coffee roasted on the premises. Try a glass or two of Flutterbies Rose Water Lemonade or a flute of French Champagne (yes they are licensed).
also offers High Tea's in the simply charming Tea Room that can be exclusively booked. If you are planning a birthday, a bridal shower , anniversary, or you just want to enjoy the yesteryear romance of nibbling on rose-flavoured delicacies, handmade sweet and savoury treats whilst sipping boutique tea or sparkling Rosé , then may I suggest the ultimate Ladies' Afternoon.
Tempted? Then best start your journey now, this weekend. Visitors have been known to travel for miles, some on horseback or helicopter or sporty little cars – tops down and the cool wind in their hair. However you find your way to Taylgum to explore the quaint shops and share the hospitality of Flutterbies Cottage Cafe, you had better be quick. The secret is out.
