It is Sunday morning, the day is glorious and I am strolling along Latrobe Terrace when I come across a shop I have not seen before. It is beautifully laid out, both inside and out, as perhaps one expects from shops in this lovely corner of Brisbane.

I walk in and started chatting to Anja, the owner and creator of Flowers of the World and when I leave I feel invigorated by my conversation with her, wanting to know more, so I come home to google and find out all I can. I am more than happy to share her details with you all.

She is a passionate person, Dutch in origin, growing up next to a florist, I guess the writing was on the wall. From a young age she would help out at the shop, whether answering the phone or delivering the flowers for a small fee on her bike and that was the start of a long and passionate association with flowers which manifests itself subtly but clearly in her shop on Latrobe Terrace.

She moved to Brisbane and established Flowers of the World in 1984.In these intervening years she has learnt a lot about flowers and their importance in our lives. As a consequence she has cultivated not only her thoughts but also her plants.

Anja will only apply sustainable practices which means using only the flowers in season which are locally produced, with no harmful chemicals or agents, minimising the use of plastic foam and other artificial substances, stocking cards using recycled paper and vegetable ink and creating practices that will help nurture and encourage nature around us all.

She indulges happily in Lexigraphy - the art of taking a word and the name of a flower and dissecting its essence through the letters.

Here are a few examples :

HOPE = Honouring of Planet Earth.
TULIP: Total Universal Love Is Peace
CACTI: Careful Approach Can't Tolerate Intimacy
IRIS: Inner Respect Is Strength

She is the writer of All Nature's Joyful Answers and Persona Botanica with another new publication to arrive soon.

She says wisely - Nature can live without us but can we live without nature ?
It is a restful, respectful, beautiful space and one where you can have fun ordering a bouquet for mother, or an arrangement for a wedding or a special potted plant for that corner of the room.

Anja is on hand not only to offer the most tasteful and artful arrangements but also to infuse a little of her earthy wisdom into your day.
