High tea

Who would have thought that high tea could be enjoyed in a busy shopping mall? Well, look no further than Pasadena Foodland's Flowerbar Patisserie! Whether you're feeling elegant or not, this place might just surprise you with unexpectedly good tea and cakes. We were delighted by our high tea experience last Monday afternoon.

On arrival, the friendly staff led us to our table within a lovely seating area in front of the store. The table has been set with well-arranged crockery and a little posy vase. Reservations are required at least two days prior, so do be mindful of that when booking your table online. You'll also need to finalise all payments at that time.

Our tea orders were taken promptly and, to my surprise, there's quite a wide range to choose from. I decided on the humble green tea while my friend thought Adelaide Breakfast was the best selection. In the end, both pots of tea were appreciated just as much.

An assortment of sweet and savoury delights were beautifully presented on a three-tiered stand. The serving was particularly generous for two people. You might want to skip lunch if you're not a big eater.

The bottom tier had chicken and tuna sandwiches together with falafels and savoury tarts. It isn't easy to find good falafels here in Adelaide, especially after travelling to the Middle East, but enough spices and green herbs have been added to these mashed chickpeas.

The middle tier held deep-coloured macarons, mini chocolate chip cupcakes and various sweet tarts. The creme patisserie in the vanilla shortcrust pastry was thick, rich and creamy while the caramel in the chocolate pastry had its typical flavour and dark orange colour. My favourite, however, was the very tangy and zesty lemon curd tart.

Finally, on the top tier sat scones and mini bottles of strawberry jam. I found it strange though that the cream (usually served with scones) was missing. Nonetheless, the scones themselves were rather light and crumbly.

Inspired by European floral boutiques, Flowerbar Patisserie is indeed a unique high tea location. I think the experience would suit any small group wishing to celebrate a special occasion. For only $30 per person, this afternoon tea affair in the middle of a mall is definitely worth a try.

The patisserie is located next to Foodland in the Pasadena Shopping Centre on Fiveash Drive. Besides high tea, they also have a variety of cakes for sale and you can drop in any time to enjoy some scones, muffins, croissants or raisin toast.
