When your parents' professions are gymnastics, nursing and naturopathy, you are bound to take on a career that consists of exercise and wellbeing. Such case applies to
Joseph Hubertus Pilates ; born in Germany in 1883, he was the man who invented Pilates or as he named it "Contrology".
Suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever when he was young, it was important for Joseph to improve his physical strength. Prior to age fourteen, Joseph was accomplished in the techniques of gymnastics, bodybuilding, boxing and martial arts, yet he still believed that the root of poor health lay in bad posture and inefficient breathing.
In 1912 Joseph moved to England and earned a living as a professional boxer, a circus performer and a self-defence trainer for the police at Scotland Yard. When the war commenced, he was interned along with other German citizens and began teaching them wrestling and self-defence. It was during this time that he started refining his techniques and teaching mat exercises, as well as aiding in the rehabilitation of injured war veterans.
After the war, he returned to Germany and again trained police officers. Onboard the ship to the United States in 1925, Joseph met his future wife Clara. He and Clara founded a studio in New York City providing classes to many well-known dancers, ballerinas and society women. He collaborated with experts in dance and physical exercise, always looking for ways to improve his techniques for others. Joseph engineered all the equipment he used in his classes to strict specifications and tuning suitable to each exercise and individual.
Pilates , as it is known today, is a series of low-impact exercises and techniques aimed to improve your posture, focus, body alignment, breath, overall strength and flexibility. It consists of an order of mat and reformer exercises. Today, we usually attend a mat or a reformer class, however, they can be blended, and also used in a clinical setting. There are many other pieces of apparatus that can be used to assist the student to perform the original mat exercises, that can be difficult for some posture types to achieve.
You often hear people say that they cannot sit still or that their minds have a thousand things going at once. The focus on breathing and undertaking the exercise during a session of Pilates gives your mind a chance to take a break from constant thoughts and worry, while also allowing you to increase your flexibility and breath control. You may believe you are only doing one exercise, but Pilates is an overall body exercise method.
