Celebrate Spring at Australia's favourite floral festival
Spring is certainly an uplifting season; the sun is shining bright, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming and there's no better place to see those flowers flourishing than at Floriade 2013, from September 14th to October 13th at Commonwealth Park in Canberra. Going strong for over 25 years, this prolific parade of top-notch tulips and so much more is sure to continue to blossom for the next 25 years.
With every Floriade comes a new theme for the designers to be inspired by when creating the immense garden beds of not only tulips, but poppies, irises and other fine flowers. Beautiful Innovation is 2013's theme, but the overall design of this years Floriade has also been influenced by the geometry of the original plan created for the city of Canberra by Mr Walter Burley Griffin, in honour of Canberra's centenary.
There's so much to experience at Floriade, surprisingly it's not just about the flowers. There are all the familiar favourites that are a joy to visit, the many market stalls, horticultural workshops, fascinating demonstrations, live music, ferris wheel and farmyard fun for the kids, as well as the ever popular gnome painting. Not only that, there are also four distinctive weeks held at Floriade, each providing particular information and experiences to investigate and absorb.
Week one will be centred around Smart Living. Some of Australia's leading names in sustainable living and bio-organic gardening will be on hand, giving you the opportunity to learn from the best. There will also be top green-thumbs from around the country digging up the hottest gardening tips to share.
Future Style lights up week two, with trendsetters and experts in the vast world of fashion bringing their knowledge to the field. For those wanting to know what's in vogue, there will be experimental designs, inspiring couture and forward-thinking trends on display for those with a passion for fashion to explore.
Brainiacs and tech-heads rejoice, as awe inspiring Invention lets loose throughout the park for week three. They say necessity is the mother of invention...or maybe it's wild ideas and the passion to make it happen. If you've got any scientific quandaries or queries you need answered, it's your lucky day, as there will be some of the country's most sensational scientists and imaginative inventors ready and raring to be put to the test. You can also check out entries for the Aspiring Inventors Competition, with some of the most innovative ideas on display.
The final week might just take the cake, with the emphasis on Contemporary Cultures. Australia has long embraced multiculturalism and the melting-pot will be in full force in week four, with traditional dances to entertain the eyes and creative cultural dishes being crafted by seasoned chefs to satisfy the stomach. The Gourmet Garden is back this year with world renowned chefs sharing their culinary delights through a variety of live demonstrations. Local chefs joining the fun will be the first ever MasterChef, Julie Goodwin, and a woman who has gone from strength to strength since appearing on MasterChef, Poh Ling Yeow, star of ABC's Poh's Kitchen.
If you're a keen night owl then fear not, Floriade has got your dream experience covered. Returning in it's 6th consecutive year, NightFest runs from Wednesday the 25th of September to Sunday the 29th of September between 6:30pm and 10:30pm, bringing Floriade to life after dark. World-class lighting designers, Mandylights, design vivid and enchanting lighting installations to create an even more captivating experience, illuminating these garden beds into a floral fantasy.
Along with the stunning light installations, NightFest also encapsulates everything you need to have an awesomely chilled night out. The Moonlight Lounge is the place to be if you're after a relaxing drink and a few laughs, with world-renowned comedians and a stellar line up of local DJ's taking to the stage. For something a little wilder, head over to the newest NightFest destination, The Electric Theatre. Thrilling circus acts, light shows and the big beats of live music will keep this fresh space pumping.
With more than enough to entertain couples, families, friends, young and old, during day and night, this is the perfect event to see floral design at it's finest and a great way to enjoy all the sights our capital city has to offer.
