An open competition for boat owners to decorate their boats with lights, the Float Your Boat event is also delightful for onlookers as they watch boats lit up in a rainbow of colour cruise past, helping them decide which one they'll vote for in the Newcastle Permanent People's Choice Award. Casting your vote could win you a $100 Visa gift card. See here for details. The event will be held over two days on Friday 24 June and Sat 25 June 2022 from 5pm to 9.30pm each day at Lake Macquarie. Check the website for more information.
Fri 24 Jun - boats will take off from Marmong Point Marina from 6pm skirting along the western side of the lake, toward Toronto, Coal Point and Wangi Wangi.
Sat 25 Jun - boats will take off from Marmong Point Marina from 6pm skirting along the eastern side of the lake, toward Warners Bay, Eleebana, Valentine and Belmont
At both events you'll find entertainment, roaming illuminated performances, kids activities and food trucks. See here for the detailed program and suggested viewing locations. The Map will give you finer details of the routes the boats will be taking.
If you'd like an up-close experience, Lake Macquarie Cruises are offering a special sausage sizzle cruise so you can join in the Float Your Boat Parade. See here to purchase tickets. Huge crowds are expected this year, so if you're going to be on shore and not on a boat, be sure to get in early for a good vantage point and to enjoy lakeside celebrations. With more than 20 kms of foreshore, get your front-row seat to wave at the passing flotilla.
Here's a tip. The Toronto Royal Motor Yacht Club is a top spot to catch night one's festivities, as the Club sits at the heart of the action. On night two, get amongst the action along the Warners Bay foreshore where the location will host lively lit-up performers, gourmet food trucks, live music acts and family-friendly entertainment. The Lake is also home to numerous delicious dining venues and you're encouraged to support local businesses by booking a table for a long lunch, cocktails before the event or dinner after watching the boats float by. Float your Boat is part of the Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival, a month-long celebration that runs till 30 June 2022. For a full list of festival events, visit the Festival website.
