Hidden away in Mt Dandenong among the picturesque forest scenery lies Flippin Pancakes, an undiscovered treasure for all those wanting to escape the Melbourne winter blues.
As we drove along the winding road up Mt Dandenong, I could not fathom that we were less than an hour away from the bustling city. The luscious green ferns, the gigantic overarching trees and little houses puffing smoke from their chimneys made me feel I was somewhere else.
As we entered the comforting cottage like restaurant from the frosty Melbourne winter chill, we were welcomed into a warm cosy interior. The heat of the fireplace made me jump with joy, this place was just perfect! Cosy, beautiful and a promise to fill our empty stomachs with indulgent soul food, there was nothing else I could ask for.
As we were seated next to a window overlooking a tiny road among acres of green forest, we were presented with our menu. The staff were very friendly, helping us decide on the oh-so-many choices that Flippin Pancakes had to offer. Not only were there savory and sweet pancakes, but main meals choices from duck to a roast, so we were spoilt for choice.
Being a vegetarian, I was happy to see a good range of choices, and ended up choosing the savory creamy mushroom pancake.
As we waited next to the crackling fire, our eyes hungrily darted from side to side peering into the generously served steaming hot plates filled with scrumptious meals sitting happily on other tables.
Finally, our meals arrived, and I was nothing less than delighted. The service at Flippin pancakes was wonderful. The smiling friendly staff were lovely to chat with, and the atmosphere homely.
I have to say, our meals were delicious. The creamy mushroom pancakes was a melt in your mouth delight. Just enough cream and mushrooms to be a perfect indulgence, with a generous serving of salad on the side to make you feel good about your meal. I was more than satisfied.
Now, it came time for dessert, so of course we had to choose what flippin pancakes are famous for - pancakes! The choices were mouth watering - from apple, banana, chocolate pancakes, I had to choose my favorite, blueberry buttermilk pancake with ice cream on the side. How divine they tasted. I can tell you, there is nothing better than comfort food on a chilly Melbourne winter day. The had generous serving of the pancake with just the perfect amount of blueberries, ice cream and maple syrup. Again, my satisfaction levels were very high. The pancakes were just right. Not to thin, not too thick - but melt in your mouth butternut pancakes - perfection on a plate.
This place is a winter retreat for all those who, along with me, feel the winter blues and need to find indulgence. The restaurant has beautiful surroundings, the prices are very reasonable, and the service is lovely, so I have to say, Flippin Pancake is the perfect Melbourne winter escape.
