After a long hike in the Dandenongs nothing beats the thought of warming up by a fire and enjoying something to eat. Flippin Pancakes is a great spot to stop and indulge in the sweeter things in life and best of all they are extremely child friendly with kids' meals, high chairs, colouring in sheets and lollies on the exit, a perfect family lunch spot.

I ordered the duo of pancakes with the Canadian maple syrup and vanilla bean ice cream for a very reasonable $9. The children had the teddy bears picnic pancakes which consisted of a pancake with ice cream and sprinkles on top with a chocolate coated teddy bear biscuit for $7 and the other half had the Devonshire pancakes with home made raspberry jam and freshly whipped cream for $10.

The rest of the menu consisted of sweet and savoury pancakes ranging between $9 - $17, if you're not in the mood for pancakes there is a separate menu with specials advertised on a board, though, expect to pay $24 - $32 for a main.

Although I haven't tried the other menu, they specialise in pancakes so I stuck with the pancakes and was not disappointed. They were light and fluffy with great texture and plenty of flavour, though the richness of the maple syrup and ice cream prevented me from finishing.

The interior of the restaurant would probably be best described as being old fashioned Tudor style with burnt orange colour scheme with exposed wood. It's warm, cosy and inviting, a bit like visiting a friend's grandmother's home with floral seats and plates, vases of flowers, salt, pepper and maple syrup on each table.

Service was fast on a very busy Sunday and wait staff were friendly and happy to accommodate little people's needs.

My only gripe is that drinks are a little overpriced with soft drink, fruit juice and hot chocolates priced at $5, not expensive but for a table of say six people having lemonade or juice is $30. You can get around it by ordering water if you like, however our water came with lots of bits in it, either the glasses weren't washed properly or it was in the water supply, so we opted for the hot chocolate instead.

Overall I think it's a great little place to take the family on a day out in the Dandenong Ranges.

There is plenty of parking down the side of the restaurant, which is great because Sassafrass is always busy and parking is limited.

The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday, for times and menu check their website here .

Enjoy visiting Flippin Pancakes.
