New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.

Who says trampolining is just for kids?
Flip Out is a trampolining centre with 21 locations across Australia. In Canberra there is a centre in the industrial area of Hume, 15 kms south of the city and another one in Mitchell, 9 kms north of the city. Flip Out centres are huge warehouses with trampolining arenas as well as foam pits and "kids only" areas for them to safely jump. For the trickier moves there are also individual trampolining areas with a higher spring mat to practice.
My daughter, aged 4, loves trampolines and I was looking for a fun way to exercise, so this seemed like the perfect combination and something we could do together - whatever the weather.
On deal websites (eg. Groupon) there are often special offers for two hours at Flip Out which is too long for us, however when we arrived at Hume I was pleased to discover that we could do the "Mums and Bubs" package with both of us jumping for one hour for $15. This deal is only available during term times for children up to the age of 6, Monday to Friday. Make sure you bring socks.
It was then time to walk around and see where we could jump together and what my daughter could enjoy on her own. For children under 7 there is a Kids Arena with a foam pit at the end to jump into...
At the end of the building are two individual trampolines with harder mats for higher jumping. When we were there, groups of teenagers were taking turns practicing their tricks and teaching each other new moves. There are also two trampolines that lead up to a large foam pit, so kids and adults can try their aerial tricks and land safely feet first. On our visit we both gave it a try and struggled to get out of it with a lot of laughter.
For both of us we could jump together in the Main Arena. When we arrived at opening time we were the only ones jumping, however by the end of the hour there were several other kids and parents having fun together. There is plenty of space to jump around, with trampolines on the walls (wallrunners) to bounce off and triangular towers in the middle to also bounce around.
I wanted exercise and I got it in this arena. After half an hour I was a puffed, sweating and horizontal on the mat getting my breath back. It was the most fun I have had exercising for a long time, with the Flip Out website stating that 10 minutes on a trampoline equates to over 30 minutes of running (see more benefits here). One hour was a good length of time to get a workout, have fun and for my daughter to try everything out. Of course she was bouncing around with an endless amount of energy and saw no need to flop down on the mats as regularly as I did.
You can also pay for your older children to jump and watch from the central café area ( a very tempting option). There is free Wifi, coffee and a range of snack and lunch options to choose from at the cafe. If your kids enjoy themselves and would like to learn more tricks, they currently have Little Ninja classes catering for ages 5 to 13. Check the Hume Flip Out Facebook page for details. There is also a party area with a range of packages, starting from $25 per child (see details here).
When my daughter and I walked out the door we were already talking about when we would return. It is a fun way for my daughter to learn balance and for us to enjoy an activity together. For $15 for one hour, this Mums and Bubs deal is ideal for us, however their two hour deal would be ideal for adults and older children to jump and rest without watching the clock. In the winter months or rainy days, this is a particularly good option to spend the morning doing an activity the whole family can enjoy. Just bring your energy!
