Erected in 1863,
Flinders Street Baptist Church was a bold and expensive Gothic-style building designed by Robert George Thomas who later became colonial architect. It was constructed of roughly coursed bluestone and its facade features elaborately carved capitals. It remains a fine example of masonry art today.
Within the church are stained glass windows naming early leadership as well as a superbly detailed porch and a gallery added in the 1870s. A hall and manse were also erected at about that time. Together, they form a great rarity and visual importance in the streetscape of Adelaide.
On Tuesdays, music lovers are treated to free lunchtime concerts at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the beautiful sounds produced by various pianists, flautists, lutists, violists, soloists and ensembles. A detailed program can be found on their
website and
Facebook page. As its name suggests, the church is located at 65 Flinders Street.
