Adelaide has got it brand new railway station and residents of the South are now enjoying better, more frequent services on the new $141 million Flinders Rail Line. The new Flinders rail service is already providing greatly improved public transport access to Flinders Medical Centre, Flinders Private Hospital and Flinders University and making it easier for students, workers and residents of Adelaide's southern suburbs to access health and education services.

The new Flinders station is an extension of the previous Tonsley line and the train line travel time to Adelaide is only 20 minutes. Train travel is an easy and convenient way to travel and a great alternative to costly car travel and parking hassles. The new line connecting Flinders University and the Flinders Medical Centre to Adelaide's rail network opened to passengers on Tuesday 29 December 2020.

The new Flinders station is accessed via a walkway near the main car park and Theo's cafe. There is an access ramp suitable for wheelchairs and prams, plus a storage area for bikes. The station design is similar to a lot of the newer Seaford line stations with its bright orange signage and sparse linear industrial lines. This design model would appear to be a deterrent to graffiti vandals.

The Flinders line was a jointly funded project with the Australian Government committing $70.5 million and the South Australian Government $70.5 million. The rail link will be part of the Flinders University Village development, with plans for a new Health and Medical Research Building in the pipeline.

Shift workers have been catered for as timetables aim to provide train services available for medical, nursing and support staff for their early morning shifts. I found the train journey to Adelaide and return was quick and easy, with plenty of train services available. The train interiors are clean and tidy as rail staff are ensuring extra cleaning services are carried out due to COVID-19.

The extension of the current Tonsley rail line includes an elevated single track over Sturt Road, Laffer's Triangle and Main South Road, linking Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University to the passenger rail network. There is also an integrated shared pedestrian/cycle path adjacent the rail line from the new ramp located at the corner of Sturt Road and Birch Crescent to the new Flinders Station.

Tonsley station is now 160-metres-long and gives access to the Tonsley Innovation District. Both the new Tonsley and Flinders stations have included up to date lighting, seating and signage to enhance accessibility for all. The rail project includes three Activated Pedestrian Crossings, two on either side of Alawoona Avenue and one further south of the new Tonsley station aligning with Handley Avenue.
