Sitting on the southern point of the Mornington Peninsula, Flinders feels more like a country town than a beachside holiday destination and unlike most of the Mornington Peninsula, which regularly becomes overrun with week-enders, Flinders seems undisturbed and unfussed by the time of year and season. It seems the same no matter when you go, locals line the streets and your troubles seem far away. There never seems to be a crowd and holiday prices never - or is that always - seem to be in effect.

The , sitting on the site of the original Bakery in Flinders, is the perfect meeting place. Whether you're on a day trip, staying a while or living the sea changing dream, the Bakehouse Cafe is a friend to all.

The warm, Sunday afternoon smell of the open fire permeates throughout the L-shaped cafe and makes the place more akin to a lounge room or the foyer of a chalet, than a traditional cafe, the sort of place to gather and talk with friends. Indeed, the morning we were there, a friendly atmosphere was in the air. No heads bowed reading papers over lattes in here. Everyone was engaged in conversation, a community at rest and at brunch.

Like most regional cafes, there is no table service but service is good nevertheless with our food and coffee arriving promptly with two delicious warm muffins for the kids.

The menu is a strange beast with a little something for everyone. Here's an example of some of the specials on offer this day: Twice roasted duck, Malaysian Curry, Flinders Mussels and Fries, Blue Eye, and Souvlaki. You can also, if you feel the need, order that most iconic of Melbourne junk food, The South Melbourne Market dim sim. Not sure how well it would go as a brunch item. No Chiko rolls on offer though.

The Big Breaky doesn't miss and is an accommodating size as are all the dishes. The lunch staples consist of Mediterranean inspired risottos and foccacia. You'll see a lot less free plate here than you will at a fine dining establishment but that will be met with an equal dearth of free space in your belly, hearty outranks elegant anyway.

Luckily there are few better places to sit and relax and wait for the food coma to subside than Flinders.

The also operates as a bakery, as you would expect, and has a good selection of freshly baked bread and pastries.
