I love foreign films, but for some unknown reason Flight Crew is the first Russian movie I've ever seen and I was impressed. This one is a remake of the 1979 blockbuster and was ranked as the number one film at the 2016 Russian Box Office. It is one of the country's top six most profitable productions.
Flight Crew takes a little while to get into the real action. The story starts off innocently enough as we find out about the backgrounds of the three pilots (one a trainee). During a flight to Asia, the pilots receive a message about an earthquake and volunteer to evacuate the stranded people before the volcano erupts.
This two-hour long film hits its stride just before the second half and boy, is it suspense filled with a capital S. You know the cliche saying that 'I was on the edge of my seat', well, I really was.
I'm not usually a fan of disaster films as Hollywood can often overdo the special effects, but this film had a different style to it – thanks to the editing, dialogue and ending.
I wouldn't recommend seeing this film if you are flying anytime soon. You might just need a stiff vodka to get to sleep after watching this one.
