Fleischers has had a presence in Glenferrie Road, Malvern for as long as I can remember. I fondly recall the rich German and Viennese black forest cakes and sacher tortes on display in the front window when I was a teenager.

At Christmas time there would be gingerbread houses of enormous proportions - a tradition that lives on today.

These days you'll find the flavours of Europe on a grander scale: pastries, truffles, meringues and fruit tarts from France; cannoli, ricotta cakes and crostoli from Italy; and Austrian strudels and plum cakes - the latter being the most popular items on the menu. These goods are all baked on the premises along with numerous biscuits, slices, tortes and fudges and are free of artificial flavours and colourings, and the taste says it all.

This cafe attracts a steady stream of locals, particularly retirees who are accustomed to enjoying a coffee and cake without haste and free of guilt, as I do. The vanilla custard ciambella (custard donut) is consistently good; especially with a cup of Italian hot chocolate the consistency of thin custard.

If you don't have a sweet tooth you won't miss out because Fleischers makes savoury pizza slices, panini, gourmet pies, breads and sausage rolls for all day dining.
