Melbourne Public has become a firm favourite venue since our first visit earlier this year. Located in the restored heritage cargo sheds on the Yarra's edge at South Wharf, Melbourne Public is a large venue offering a great range of drinks, food and entertainment.

We recently visited to try their latest offering, What's Your Flava?, a series of specially developed cocktails. If you're one of those people who can't get enough caffeine, then this series is for you; it's cocktails with a variation on the average Espresso Martini. In developing the range, Melbourne Public has trialed different liquors, spices and fragrances to create carefully curated flavours.

Head Mixologist at Melbourne Public, Michael Schoonraad, is eager to share this new cocktail series with the people of Melbourne. "Our MP regulars have been very patient and have sampled a variety of flavours – with all of them being really well received. Usually I would say that adaptations are never as popular as the classics when it comes to cocktails, but I think that this may well be the exception."

The flavours will work on a weekly rotation, with the first four flavours to be salted caramel, jaffa, Irish cream and Fireball.

We tried two of the flavours - salted caramel and Fireball. The first tasted like a dessert in a cocktail, a little like liquid butterscotch. The rim of the glass was crusted with salt, and the idea is to sip the drink over the salt to get the 'salted caramel' effect. If you're a sweet tooth, you'll love this one.

The Fireball, which is served garnished with a cinnamon quill, has a slightly fiery kick, courtesy of the addition of a good dash of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky. Of the two, this was definitely my favourite. It has a complex spicy flavour and a long finish which I enjoyed.

Just by way of 'research', I then had to try a standard Espresso Martini too, just to see how it compared. While the variation cocktails are an interesting twist, it's hard to improve on perfection! I can only encourage you to drop into Melbourne Public and see which of the drinks you prefer.

The best time to try the What's Your Flava? range is during Melbourne Public's 'REALLY Happy Hour', which takes place between 4-7pm Monday to Friday, when the What's Your Flava? cocktails are available for $10 each. They are $18 otherwise.

I suggest visiting between 4-7pm on a Friday, when you can buy oysters natural for a budget beating $1 each to snack on while you enjoy your cockails.

Melbourne Public is located at 1 Dukes Walk, South Wharf, and is open from 12 noon to 1.00am every day.
