Yes, that's the Three Sisters at the Blue Mountains. Posters and postcards about the Blue Mountains invariably show the Three Sisters. For most, the highlight of a trip to the Blue Mountains is a photo at Echo Point in Katoomba with the Three Sisters in the background. Of course, there are other attractions, such as the Blue Mountains Chocolate Company , a good walk from Echo Point, or the Toy Museum in Leuralla. For a change, how about taking the road less travelled? Let the following photo speak for itself.

This is not for the faint of heart. Flat Rock, also locally known as the Wedding Rock (because it is a very nice spot to pose for a wedding photo), is a big rock jutting out from the Kings Tableland in Wentworth Falls. It is not fenced, and the drop to the valley below could be fatal. Vertigo and gusty Blue Mountains wind are not a good combination. Sitting on the edge of the world without a harness takes courage, while walking towards the edge is a challenge in itself.

There is a fair warning to visitors. The cliff is not fenced and there is danger of falling, particularly because the rock could be slippery and the gusty wind in the area can impair your balance. The warning notwithstanding, the view from the Flat Rock is breathtaking.

How to Get There

Flat Rock is not a stop in the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus, the red double decker bus that is best for sightseeing around the Blue Mountains. Hence, you need your own transportation to get there, or you need to book a tour with a local travel agency.

If you are coming from Sydney, turn left at Tableland Road from the Great Western Highway. After approximately 1.8 kilometres, turn right to Hordern Road. At the end of Hordern Road, turn left to Little Switzerland Drive. As of writing, this is a dirt road, so be prepared. After approximately 200 metres, you will see the Flat Rock signage off the road to your right.

Parking may be an issue. A big bus and maybe a couple of cars can park without problems near the signage. If there is a crowd, you may park further down Little Switzerland Drive, or it may be prudent to leave your car near the Kings Tableland Observatory at the end of Hordern Road. It is a short 3-5 minutes walk to Flat Rock from there.

And then you can go the road usually travelled and visit the spots indicated in the Blue Mountains Explorer bus route map. [ Click here to download a copy of the map ]

Don't forget to stop by the Chocolate Company. There's a small play area for kids, while adults can sip hot chocolate in style. There is also free chocolate tasting, if you are into sweets.
