I happen to be the mother of two young ice hockey players and due to this predicament, find myself spending every Thursday night and every Sunday morning at the ice arena in Thebarton. The other Sunday, one of the other hockey mums mentioned a place very close to the rink that specializes in delicious hot Lebanese breads. I was cold and hungry and all I could think of was checking this place out.
The boys made their way off the ice and once all their sweaty gear was packed away in their hockey bags, we were ready to go. Imagine my surprise when they mentioned that they were starving. Within minutes, we were at the Flat Bread Cafe-Mart at shop 6, 34 Henley Beach Rd in Mile End. What a fantastic place. Their facebook page says that they have been open since January but the bakery has been making bread up the road at the Flat Bread Bakery for over 30 years.
They offer beautiful Lebanese pizzas; some topped with cheese, others with aromatic mixed herbs, marinated chicken or meat. They also sell delicious dips, amazing baklava and other Lebanese grocery items including, of course, fresh pita bread. Order the pizzas hot and the smiling staff will fold them over and heat them in the oven. For a little zing, say yes when they offer chili and lemon on yours. These mouth watering hot breads range in price from $2 - $6.50 and are quite substantial in size.
This place is so well worth the visit that I have recently had to cross town on a weekday to satisfy my craving. This weekend, my boys are participating in a junior ice hockey jamboree at the arena so I know where I am going for lunch.
