You can't help but be drawn to the kitsch, astro-turfed garden of perspex furniture and striped awnings that is the charming, little Flamingo Café. Hidden away in the unsuspecting Winn Lane, it channels summertime in the 70's and its pink interior could brighten up a storm cloud in a dumpster.

For all its decoration, they keep the menu simple and wholesome, the prices cheap and the service friendly. All day breakfasts are no more than $10, with satisfying open sandwiches including one loaded with tomato, avocado and labna, a creamy cheese and flavoured with basil oil or a creamy bircher muesli. Ask and they will exchange any of the breads for gluten free bread.

The list of fresh juices have some unique combinations packing a zesty punch like the pear, apple and mint or if you are feeling so inclined, try the surprising avocado, banana, soy and nutmeg. It is a refreshing alternative to coffee on a sweltering day.

The lunch menu is a similar affair consisting of mainly fun sandwich combos or daily specials like haloumi, beetroot and apple salad. Mouth-watering treats are also a nice addition to the offerings with ever changing muffins and brownies.

So find your sunglasses and bring yourselves down to this delightfully vintage laneway in the middle of Fortitude Valley to soak up the sun on a warm day.
