There is a new bakery just opened up in Kirribilli and it is soaring with popularity. We are not sure what it was that caught our attention first, the bright Tiffany Blue exterior or the name 'Flaky Tart Bakery'?
When it comes to a classic meat pie, everyone has a defining pie memory, whether it's at a footy game, the swimming carnival or backyard BBQ. Mine started from the school canteen and I like my pie the good old fashion way.
Flaky Tart Bakery is conveniently located next to the Milson's Point station and it is one of the most popular places in the neighbourhood. This bakery is always busy from the time they open till the time they close.
The premise is quite narrow and small. Large industrial coffee machines occupy the front section of the bakery. Judging from the queue, both the barista and the coffee machines are working overtime to keep up with weekend demand for a great fresh-brewed coffee.
Before you reach the meat-pie cabinets, you will see two large glass display cabinets filled with amazing home-made biscuits, banana breads, vanilla slices, apple pies and assorted patisseries. The cake displays are really distracting because you are likely to over-order on impulse.
This pie tasted really good. The succulent chunky steak fillings were generous; the thickened gravy sauce was moreish; and the golden pastry on top was light and flaky while it remains un-soggy at the bottom. We added a dollop of tomato sauce (extra $0.30) on top and this was the home-style pie we craved for.
Flaky Tart Bakery is small place that serves good old-fashion pies and strong coffee. Do takeaways and enjoy the pies, pastries and coffee under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is Sydney life at its best.
