Wollongong is often overlooked in favour of its purportedly grander and more sophisticated big sister, Sydney, but the beachside steel town has more to offer than ever. A little more than an hour south of Sydney, Wollongong is home to the Five Islands Brewery.
Beer, beer, some bistro food and then some more beer; this is what the Five Islands Brewery has to offer. At $5.50 a schooner these award winning beers aren't the cheap and cheerful type, but they do hit the spot nicely. To sweeten the deal they also throw in some live entertainment on Thursdays and Sundays.
Established in 2001 the Five Islands Brewery Company brews local beers which can be enjoyed while looking out of Wollongong's beaches, listening to some local talent or grabbing a bistro feed. The bistro menu ranges from cheap starters right through to the $65 seafood platter, there really is something for everyone, including the kids. Even the non-beer drinkers are catered for with a cocktail menu, starting at $12 a pop. To cover all bases, 'The Brewery' as it is affectionately known as, also puts on a Wednesday trivia night to test your knowledge of all things trivial.
Featuring a newly renovated bar and outside seating area, the Five Islands Brewery is a place to check out. With the relaxed atmosphere of Wollongong and some of the sophistication of Sydney, do not miss it.
