1. Grape Picking at Traralgon Vineyards
Owned and managed by a warm, friendly, welcoming family, Traralgon Vineyards hosts an annual grape-picking day where family and friends are invited to spend the day picking grapes. The day begins at 8.30am, with a delightful morning tea of sweet treats and hot tea and coffee served at 10am, and then back to work before ending the day with a lunch of sandwiches, cold meats, salads and vineyard wines. Tough work, but a great half-day activity in the outdoors, surrounded by gorgeous views and welcomed by friendly community volunteers of all ages.

2. Donate Blood or Plasma
Blood and blood products are used to help in emergency situations, treat long term chronic illnesses, and contribute to making immunisations. Blood donation takes about 15 minutes, while plasma donation takes around 45 minutes. Allow 1 hour extra for both to fill in the questionnaire, complete an interview, donate, and then to rest and eat to restore sugar levels. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has several donor centers and mobile units , open at various times. Two city donor centres are conveniently located on Bourke St and Southbank. Mobile units may be arranged to collect from your workplace (if enough people are willing to donate) so why not organize a donor drive?

3. Share Your Compassion
Assist your community members by donating your time to serve meals at a soup kitchen and distribute warm clothes for the Salvation Army or Sacred Heart Mission ; spend a few hours talking or sharing in an activity with young and older community members; assist people with a disability; help raise awareness about NGOs such as Beyondblue and Oxfam ; or be a Mentor/tutor for a student.

4. Participate in Community Events
Volunteer your time to assist in a community project such as for the Sustainable Living Festival or participate in a variety of interesting and educational conservation projects . You will be rewarded with new friendships, gained skills, challenging experiences, and are guaranteed to have fun!

5. Be a Visitor Guide for Melbourne
Love this city and want to promote how wonderful it is? Become a tour guide for a few hours and assist locals and visitors with their queries on where to go and what to do, or lead guided tours of popular tourist attractions. Remember to direct visitors to subscribe to WeekendNotes to keep up to date on what's going on in and around our great city!

Check out these great sites - Eco-shout , Volunteering Victoria , Melbourne City Mission , and Go Volunteer - with many volunteering ideas and useful tips on how to choose the best option to suit your interests and available time.
